چکیده

We develop a Discrete Element Method (DEM) for elastodynamics using polyhedral elements. We show that for a given choice of forces and torques, we recover the equations of linear elastodynamics in small deformations. Furthermore, the torques and forces derive from a potential energy, and thus the global equation is an Hamiltonian dynamics. The use of an explicit symplectic time integration scheme allows us to recover conservation of energy, and thus stability over long time simulations. These theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations of test cases involving large displacements. Mathematics Subject Classification. 65Z05. Received January 4, 2011. Back-calculation of mechanical parameters of shell and balls materials from discrete element method simulations

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used for mathematical modeling and simulating the behavior of discrete discs and discrete spheres in two and three dimensional space, respectively. Prediction of particles flow regime, power draw and kinetic energy for a laboratory or an industrial mill is possible by DEM simulation. In this article, a new approach was used to assess the main paramet...

Asynchronous Variational Integrators

We describe a new class of asynchronous variational integrators (AVI) for nonlinear elastodynamics. The AVIs are distinguished by the following attributes: (i) The algorithms permit the selection of independent time steps in each element, and the local time steps need not bear an integral relation to each other; (ii) the algorithms derive from a spacetime form of a discrete version of Hamilton’...

Discrete Element Modeling of Dynamic Compaction with Different Tamping Condition

Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a common deep compaction method that is usually used for densification of coarse-grained soils. Although traditional continuum-based models such as the Finite Element Method can be successfully applied for assessment of stress distributions or deformations induced by DC, they are typically not adequate for capturing the grain scale mechanisms of soil behavior under im...

Space-time Finite Element Methods for Elastodynamics: Formulations and Error Estimates*

Space-time finite element methods are developed for classical elastodynamics. The approach employs the discontinuous Galerkin method in time and incorporates stabilizing terms of least-squares type. These enable a general convergence theorem to be proved in a norm stronger than the energy norm. Optimal error estimates are predicted, and confirmed numerically, for arbitrary combinations of displ...

Energy law preserving C0 finite element schemes for phase field models in two-phase flow computations

We use the idea in [33] to develop the energy law preserving method and compute the diffusive interface (phase-field) models of Allen-Cahn and Cahn-Hilliard type, respectively, governing the motion of two-phase incompressible flows. We discretize these two models using a C0 finite element in space and a modified midpoint scheme in time. To increase the stability in the pressure variable we trea...
